Reliance on distraction is associated with increased avoidance behavior under approach-avoidance conflict

چکیده
Abstract The use of less effective emotional regulation strategies, such as distraction, may relate to greater reliance on avoidance behavior under conflict. Tulsa 1000 participants (n = 478) were recruited trans diagnostically and completed an approach conflict (AAC) task. Following the task, reported their distraction strategy. Quantile regression showed negative main effects age This suggests that individuals who a strategy are more likely engage in conflict, which has treatment implications.

Human Hippocampus Arbitrates Approach-Avoidance Conflict
Animal models of human anxiety often invoke a conflict between approach and avoidance. In these, a key behavioral assay comprises passive avoidance of potential threat and inhibition, both thought to be controlled by ventral hippocampus. Efforts to translate these approaches to clinical contexts are hampered by the fact that it is not known whether humans manifest analogous approach-avoidance d...
متن کاملThe influence of approach-avoidance motivational orientation on conflict adaptation.
To deal effectively with a continuously changing environment, our cognitive system adaptively regulates resource allocation. Earlier findings showed that an avoidance orientation (induced by arm extension), relative to an approach orientation (induced by arm flexion), enhanced sustained cognitive control. In avoidance conditions, performance on a cognitive control task was enhanced, as indicate...
متن کاملEffects of preference on displacement in approach-avoidance conflict.
This experiment reexamined displacement as originally formulated by Murray and Berkun. Similarity to the goal and spatial placement of the alleys were manipulated with an additional variable of brightness (black) and texture (hardware cloth floor) preference in rats. It was found that 5s traveled least down the white smooth-floor alleys, midway down the gray screen-floor alleys, and farthest do...
متن کاملPosture as Index for Approach-Avoidance Behavior
Approach and avoidance are two behavioral responses that make people tend to approach positive and avoid negative situations. This study examines whether postural behavior is influenced by the affective state of pictures. While standing on the Wii™ Balance Board, participants viewed pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant pictures (passively viewing phase). Then they had to move their body to the lef...
متن کاملAsymmetrical attributions for approach versus avoidance behavior.
Five studies examined responsibility inferences and/or person and situation attributions in positively versus negatively valenced motivational contexts. In Experiment 1, participants received information about a teaching assistant who was promised a reward or threatened with a punishment when asked for compliance with a requested transgression. The teaching assistant was perceived as more respo...
